34 years in power - a democratically elected government and the people of West Bengal.

The West Bengal State Assembly Election, 2011 ended 34 years of oppression and political offence. The rule of Left Front government - the longest serving Communist government in the world - is a fact that was noted by the international community. Who is responsible for such oppression and political murders, a democratically elected government or the people the State themselves?

There may be a question whether a crime like murder be termed as “political”. The nature of a crime is distinguished by the motive behind it. Where a political murder is committed to make political gain/objective against a group of persons who hold views contrary to the political party which commits it. The said group of persons may be another political party or simply the common people. But irrespective of the fact whether such offences are committed against a political party and/or to oppress the common people, it should be the duty of the common people - who has power to vote - to raise voice against it. Because, in representative democracy or Indirect democracy, the people govern themselves but they do so by entrusting the entire administration whom they chose by ballots. Also, there should be an effective role of the watchdog of democracy, i.e. the media.

Unfortunately, as it appears to me that. the most of the people of West Bengal were not conscious enough so that they had elected such a biased government for more than 34 years in power and also most watchdogs of the same democracy became so corrupted that they have forgotten to perform their actual duty for which they were supposed to be dedicated to; so that they could have made the people conscious - socially and politically rather such watchdogs are probably motivated by the high paid advertisements more. Obviously this would mean that the very less people here have adequate respect and/or knowledge in the law of the land but unconsciously putting themselves in jeopardy. Therefore, the people were more responsible for such oppression than the then ruling government.

I believe that we should respect our country and the constitution then only we can achieve betterment.
